Job Description

Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (MI) is a community of scholars, journalists, activists, and civic leaders who are united by a shared commitment to advancing economic opportunity, individual liberty, and the rule of law in America and its great cities. MI is independent, creative, and bold, and we are seeking a like-minded Grant Writerfor our Development team.

The successful applicant will possess a deep interest in public policy at the national, state, and local levels. Most importantly, the candidate will demonstrate the ability to author compelling grant proposals to individuals and foundations, with experience in analyzing complex public policy ideas with strategic goals in mind.

Responsibilities

The grant writer will report to our Director of Foundation Relations & Policy Initiatives.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Researching grant opportunities
  • Collaborating with the Research, Communications, and External Affairs teams to gather detailed information for grant proposals and reports
  • Authoring compelling grant proposals
  • Authoring interim and final reports for individual and foundation grants, including financial reports

The ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrate strong philosophical alignment with MI's policy priorities and a keen interest in supporting and extending this work
  • Demonstrate maturity, sound judgment, and an understanding of the policy and professional landscape within which we operate
  • Be a great wordsmith and careful reader, with a mastery of spelling, grammar, and style
  • Be confident and creative while also open to guidance and feedback
  • Thrive working both independently and in a team environment
  • A background in political philosophy or public policy is a plus
  • A familiarity with grant-making institutions is a plus

Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience in writing, with a willingness to learn and apply grant writing skills
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and meet assignment deadlines in a busy environment
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational capability
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required

This role is remote. However, New York City residents are encouraged to apply, and financial support is available for new hires who wish to move to New York City.

Some travel to MI’s NYC office will be expected for both local and remote employees, approximately 2% of the time.

The salary range for this position is $70,000/year to $95,000/year. The salary offered to a candidate will depend on skills, experience, and education.
